While in 2024 many companies are reporting higher employee engagement, workforce turnover still ranks among today’s biggest labour market challenges. Retaining talented people can’t be done with the same tools we used 20 years ago. The rapid pace of change, new generations entering the workforce, and emerging technologies all demand fresh approaches to organisational development.
So what kind of mindset shift can help us here? And which methods can make that shift real inside a company? These were the questions we explored in a recent Game Changers podcast episode with Zoltán Kassa, Head of Compensation and Organisational Development at Erste Hungary.
The power to retain lies within us
Any leadership effort to boost engagement is worth noting—bonuses, benefits, flexible schedules can all have real impact. But will these create lasting motivation?
Without intrinsic drive, such measures are temporary fixes. As leaders, we can’t hand over inner motivation on a silver platter—but we can cultivate a mindset and development tools that help employees find it for themselves. Knowing our limits and strengths is the foundation for inner stability—and by extension, workplace stability.
The motivating power of strengths
Traditional training and development often focus on fixing weaknesses. This can push our strengths into the background, leaving valuable potential unused. We tend to take our strengths for granted—until a job interview catches us off guard with the question: “What are your strengths?”
Recognising and intentionally using our strengths gives us the courage and confidence to apply them fully. As Zoltán Kassa notes:
“Many people focus too heavily on what they need to improve. But starting from strengths makes it easier to tackle weaknesses—because strengths give you the energy needed for growth and resilience.”

Many paths to the goal
We often rely on habits and past experience—even when it comes to development. But in a fast-changing labour market, “this is how we’ve always done it” won’t cut it. Following trends in organisational development matters, too.
“In organisational development, we must actively look for new approaches to avoid falling back on routine. Even in daily operations, we need fresh ideas, new perspectives, and inspiring input. Alongside shared programs, we should offer individual growth opportunities like coaching and mentoring,” says Zoltán.
It’s clear that individual development pathways will play an even bigger role going forward. New tools and methods aim to help employees see that there’s more than one route to any destination. Everyone’s path may differ—but by tapping into their own strengths, people can reach their goals successfully.
