Just like in other areas of life, generational differences are becoming increasingly evident in the world of work. We are already learning more and more about Generation Z’s presence in the workplace, while Generation Alpha is only just approaching the threshold of employment. What’s certain is that due to the major technological leaps of recent decades, the gap between generations has widened significantly, making workplace integration more challenging. But what do we already know, and how can workplaces prepare for the needs of these new entrants?

Work Begins in Education

With the changes in the labour market over the past 20 years, the number of available career paths has multiplied. Answering the question “What will I be when I grow up?” is increasingly difficult for young people. There is a lack of accessible information to help them find their calling, and traditional education cannot provide adequate space to prepare students for the world of work.

In order for the next generations to choose careers with realistic expectations and visions, the topics of career orientation and workplace culture must become fundamental in schools. More personal encounters and hands-on experience will be key in ensuring that young entrants build their careers with confidence and remain in their chosen profession or workplace.

Feedback is Now an Expectation

Naturally, successful integration also requires that workplaces understand the motivations and expectations carried by the new generations. These include a demand for positive feedback and more open communication.

A motivating work environment provides opportunities for genuine connections with colleagues and embraces flexibility in when and where work is done. They are far more willing to leave a job if the conditions don’t match their expectations. However, their innovative ideas and fresh approach to technology bring added value to any company.

Here are three key principles leaders can use to offer positive reinforcement and a supportive work environment:

  • Positive feedback and reinforcement are not limited to words. Giving them autonomy in their work and space to discuss their ideas helps support the competence and development of young employees.

  • Mental health and workplace values are particularly important to Generations Alpha and Z. Creating a safe and honest communication culture is essential to ensuring a sense of security at work.

  • While they value clear boundaries between work and private life, that doesn’t mean they view the workplace as just a place to work. They seek connection with colleagues, and a strong sense of workplace community can be even more important for retention.

“A leader must pay attention to ensure that certain generational attitudes (like using new methods, being constantly present online, etc.) don’t lead to gossip and tension that keep new employees under constant stress,” warns Dr. Katalin Baracsi, generational and social media expert.

She also points out that one of the main sources of conflict between generations is how differently they perceive and approach situations:

“The upcoming generation needs space in communication and conflict resolution. We can’t exclude them from these situations just because we feel we don’t speak the same language as leaders, or we lack the patience to bridge perspectives,” she adds.

Short-Term Goals for Long-Term Retention

The accelerated pace of the labour market is also reflected in how we think about organising work—not in yearly plans, but in project-based terms. While this approach is increasingly common in general, it aligns particularly well with the mindset of Generations Alpha and Z. Short-term goals provide greater visibility without the feeling of being tied down.

Beyond appealing to young people who value independence, this approach also offers advantages for company progress. With short-term strategic planning, the emphasis is on specificity and measurability, making it easier to monitor and evaluate goals effectively.

Overall, although many questions remain about the newest generations entering the workforce, it’s clear that labour market changes reflect the trends they bring. Understanding and adapting to these trends is not only crucial for retaining young talent but also essential for the growth and development of any company.
