The effective operation of a company and the workplace well-being of its employees are inseparable. The nature of most workplaces inevitably places us in stressful situations—so strategies that make everyday work easier are worth their weight in gold. One such strategy is integrating gamification into corporate processes or organising team-building events that include a dose of healthy competition.
Why workplace well-being matters
We spend 7–8 hours a day with our colleagues. Whether we plan it or not, they become part of our daily lives. For many, the workplace has replaced the concept of a “second home”—friendships form here just as they did in school.
To feel good and perform well, we need to know the people we work with. This is especially true in project-based environments where progress depends on collaboration, not just parallel effort.
Well-being strategies can take many forms. Gamification fits right in—whether it’s reward-based programs that encourage healthier lifestyles or lighter, more engaging meeting formats. Healthy competition is another valuable tool, and to explore why, Gergő Bárány, Hed of Events at [eureka], shares his thoughts.
Why we shouldn’t be afraid of healthy competition
The phrase “healthy competition” can sound contradictory. How can something that produces winners and losers be positive?
If competition is about clashing egos and undermining performance, it will indeed create a toxic atmosphere. But implemented within clear, well-designed frameworks, it can be a powerful motivator—especially when separated from day-to-day work pressures.
“This is exactly why competitive scenarios work so well in team-building games. They create a safe space to process workplace dynamics and tensions. But our golden rule is: no competitive game without a cooperative element. While it’s great to let participants show their competitive side, they should also see that the best solutions come from collaboration,” explains Gergő.

What makes a game truly “team-building”?
This is the key distinction between a simple game and a real team-building experience. The latter focuses on supporting each other, mirroring the demands of real work situations, and developing essential soft skills.
Naturally, the “experience factor” can vary depending on the goal, so the format must match the team’s needs. Add a sprinkle of competition, and you can create a completely different energy compared to a standard activity-based event.
“For example, in our Pirates of the Rum Ses game,” Gergő says, “we combine cooperation and competition for an immersive, inclusive experience. Teams earn points by completing tasks, but that’s not the only thing that matters. They can exchange points for decorative elements to design their own pirate ship—and the game ends with a ship beauty contest. This way, everyone can find a role they enjoy, and team cohesion is naturally built.”
Of course, Pirates of the Rum Sea is just one option. The most important thing is to choose a format that matches your team’s culture and needs. If you’d like to explore which blend of cooperation and competition could boost both well-being and performance in your team, we’re here to design it with you.
