Kudo Cards
A Set of Motivational and Appreciation Cards
You’ve probably heard the term before — but aren’t quite sure what it means. “Kudos,” “appreciation cards,” or “karma cards” are gamified motivational tools that, while still not widespread, have become hugely popular worldwide. Even the biggest companies use them to build a positive workplace atmosphere and strengthen a sense of community.
The word kudos (or kudo) comes from ancient Greek, meaning fame or glory. It entered English in the late 18th century and has since spread globally. Today, it’s used as a synonym for praise or recognition.
More Than a Pat on the Back – Recognition You Can Hold in Your Hand
Kudo cards are all about positive written reinforcement. They don’t just motivate a colleague — they deepen emotional engagement by making someone feel valued at work. They also play a key role in community building: instead of focusing on mistakes, they help teams notice and celebrate positive traits, strengthening bonds and creating a supportive culture.
A good deck is a pack of good vibes. Each card carries a themed headline to frame the praise and a short, meaningful sentence of appreciation. Receiving one feels special — it says you matter, and that your contributions are noticed.
Tip: Tailor appreciation topics to your own workplace. Recognition hits harder when it’s about quality, not just quantity — like a small but meaningful extra effort, voluntary overtime, or a presentation delivered with impact.

How to Get Started
Because they’re about personal appreciation, kudo cards work best when they include a handwritten note. If your team’s feeling creative, you can even design and print your own deck.
Some teams set up a “praise wall” to display cards publicly. Others place a “kudo box” in a quiet spot so anyone can drop in a note of thanks. Open the box during team meetings every 4–6 weeks and take time to relive these moments — you’ll see morale lift while sharing a genuine, communal experience.
Kudo cards can also help break down silos and smooth hierarchy. When recognition flows freely, performance improves. Teams that respect and value each other as partners move faster and adapt more easily to challenges.
How We’ve Done It
Last year, a large food industry company asked us to boost satisfaction and cohesion in their 40-person customer service team. After needs assessment and one-on-one discussions, it was clear the first step was improving communication and motivation.
We created a customised EureCard deck for them — a set of travelling kudo cards tailored to their culture. Cards could be given and passed on, keeping the recognition alive. Soon, “kudoing” became part of the daily routine, starting from onboarding. Within months, team performance showed a measurable boost.
If you’d like to see how a positive, gamified recognition tool could energise your own team, we’re happy to talk it over.
