How Does a Diverse Group Become a Real Team?
Once typical mainly at multinational corporations, multicultural environments—“multikulti”—have become common at small and medium-sized businesses too, especially since COVID. This diversity creates rich and inspiring workplaces, but it can also bring moments of discomfort—for us or our international colleagues.
Why does this happen? How can we move past surface-level fixes and ease that tension—using the power of play? And how can a diverse group transform into a team, almost like magic?
I’m Gergő Bárány, Head of Events at [eureka], and here are a few thoughts.
Multicultural teams are an exciting challenge
We often get team-building requests from companies with diverse teams—and we’re always glad when we do. Working with multicultural groups is both rewarding and important. Skilled facilitation ensures the team feels supported, guided, and engaged—no matter the mix of backgrounds.
Avoid overprotection
One common misstep is the “mother hen” approach. While well-meaning, it can backfire—highlighting differences instead of building common ground, and sidelining the rest of the team in the process.
This applies to event details too. Choosing food or venues based on what you think an international colleague might like can become positive discrimination. The goal is not to shield—but to integrate. Treat everyone as equals.
The language question
A Chilean-born colleague who communicates in English is unlikely to enjoy a game conducted entirely in Hungarian—no matter how beautiful the language. If your team includes international members, run the game in English (or another shared language everyone understands well).
If you’re unsure whether the company’s official language works comfortably for all outside of work, consider an interpreter for the event. Facilitators can also help ensure no one misses key moments. A game should never exclude anyone—language should be a bridge, not a barrier.
