Beyond Communication Barriers
How to Make Connection Easier
We often talk about the importance of smooth, transparent communication. It shapes how a company works internally, how departments collaborate, and even how organisations connect with each other.
Online platforms have made it easier to exchange information, but they rarely create the depth needed for real understanding. Conferences and workshops can offer a good starting point, yet walking up to someone you don’t know and starting a conversation is rarely easy.
So how can we make that first step simpler—and what helps us reach each other more effectively? In the latest episode of our Game Changers podcast, Tamás Barathi, co-founder of BlueColibri, shared his perspective.
From Networking to True Connection
Building relationships matters—to employees and to the organisation as a whole. But if the focus is purely on business outcomes, networking can quickly become shallow and short-lived. LinkedIn connections or likes on a post only mean something if they grow into real dialogue.
“There are so many areas—employer branding, recruitment, internal communication, or shaping the internal culture—where everyone is affected, and yet they still fail to truly connect,” says Barathi.
Gallup’s research supports this: only 13% of employees feel their organisation’s leadership communicates effectively across departments.
The Key to Creative Breakthroughs
Face-to-face interaction fuels knowledge sharing and inspires new ideas. Innovation rarely happens in isolation—it grows in spaces where people feel safe to exchange thoughts and collaborate.
“I think very few people in Hungary are truly comfortable approaching someone and starting a conversation on their own. We don’t have the practice, we weren’t socialised into it, we haven’t picked up these skills. And I think a lot of support is needed in this area,” Barathi notes. This is why event organisers, conference planners, and community builders have such an important role in making meaningful connections possible.
The ‘Wow Factor’ and What’s Behind It
Events and workshops can be fertile ground for new relationships—but only if people feel at ease. Creating spaces where participation is natural and not forced makes all the difference. Humor can help—especially when it’s unexpected. A playful activity or a surprising format can break the ice and make it easier to approach someone.
“What I see at our events is a certain lightness, and that lightness comes from us creating a safe space where it’s okay to talk to someone, where it’s okay to approach someone… when we create a setting, question, or game that helps break down this barrier to connection—that’s when the real process begins,” says Barathi.
