Bitrise, Hungary's hottest IT startup and a genuine unicorn story, runs a yearly all-staff retreat called Bitreat. In 2022, 180 colleagues from offices across the UK, the US, Japan and the EU converged in Hungary for three days of strategy, shared meals and, if they wanted it, play. The brief that came to us was one we do not get often: do not build one programme for everyone. Build a menu, and let people choose.
For a multicultural, Gen Y and Z team that had grown up with genuine games, the bar for fun was high. Sack race was not going to cut it.

We brought five games to Hungary and ran them across three evenings, each one sized and paced for a different kind of crowd. The opening evening was the only moment the whole 180-person group came together: Glamour Society, a 1920s Prohibition-era party game with dressing-up, team tasks, interviewing, and a final quiz. Light enough that nobody felt put on the spot, social enough that it did exactly what a first evening should do: break the ice across offices, time zones and job titles.
From the second evening onwards, colleagues chose their own adventure. The Superhero Challenge sent teams of up to 80 through a points-based hero journey with quizzes, creative tasks and an actor-led finale. The Underwood Mystery split 30 players into detective teams to solve a murder, with professional actor-investigators roaming between tables. Don't Be Afraid of the Wolf ran as an intimate cooperative board game for groups of up to 16, driven by a game master and built on bluffing, storytelling and reading the room. And the Bitrise Special Edition, a custom-tailored improv theatre and quiz hybrid, gave participants the chance to shape a live show from their seats.
Every game ran in English, every game ran to a full house given its capacity, and nobody had to do anything they did not want to do.

180 colleagues, zero awkward silences. The Glamour Saloon opener gave everyone a shared reference point before the programme had even properly begun.
Choice changed the energy. When people pick their game, they show up differently. Every session ran to capacity with participants who genuinely wanted to be there.
Games that matched the culture. A young, globally distributed tech team got exactly what they would have expected from a company they love working for.
