In 2021, UniCredit Bank launched an internal Talent Program to give high-performing and motivated employees the opportunity to get a deeper understanding of the organisation, explore career paths, and apply their capabilities to improving workplace processes.

UniCredit Bank's HR team was looking for a solution to select the best candidates for the 20 available spots in the Talent Programme, without resorting to a traditional, uninspiring Assessment Centre. They wanted something fun and playful, yet capable of assessing the program's focus criteria rigorously and professionally. The ideal Talent candidate profile covered 6 areas:

  • curiosity,

  • self-motivation,

  • outstanding collaboration skills,

  • resilience,

  • openness to change,

  • eagerness to learn.

These competencies needed to be assessed across 40 candidates, for which they sought an external partner with expertise in both gamification and organisational development.

An adventure in the Kingdom of Homofis

An adventure in the Kingdom of Homofis

For Talent candidates coming from a variety of roles, it was essential to create a safe and comfortable shared space. The online environment offered the perfect solution for this. From the shared need for immersion and a stress-free experience, an online cooperative game was born: the Unusual Knight's Tale.

The Unusual Knight's Tale is a gamified community-building program in which players step into the shoes of adventuring knights. Players are free to explore the adventure- and humour-filled Kingdom of Homofis, encountering intriguing puzzles, interesting decisions, and quirky characters along the way.

The gamified assessment program guided candidate teams through 8 checkpoints. At each checkpoint, players faced different challenges to be solved either as a team or individually, all while fulfilling the underlying assessment criteria. Throughout the game, candidates solved clever puzzles, gathered clues, debated and made decisions, and chose their own path to the goal.

Tasks were designed so that each station assessed a target competency. Candidates worked through these cooperatively, with full freedom to find their own way to the solution.

At the various stations, communication skills, leadership attitude, cooperation, agility, and team player elements could each be assessed individually and scored using an expert scoring system.

The programme ran on Microsoft Teams, through which candidates found themselves in an interactive, visually engaging story set in the Kingdom of Hommofisz. The facilitator interface was powered by our proprietary LearnQuest platform.

Thanks to the role-playing elements and humorous narrative, participants quickly loosened up and were able to bring out the competencies within them.

The real impact:

The real impact:

The ideal group size for the online team-building game is 8–10 people per session. Following a total of 5 sessions of 90-minute online adventures, our team delivered a detailed report to the client. The report included a description of the program elements, objective professional scoring of each candidate, a brief subjective characterization of every candidate, and a final recommendation regarding admission to the Talent Program. The client accepted the report and its findings in full, and made their participation decisions in line with our recommendations.
