The Connect Conference is a business event about connection: internal communication, community building, and the people who make both happen. HR professionals, marketers and communicators from across Hungary gather for a full day at the Eiffel Art Studios in Budapest. The venue is spectacular, the agenda is packed, and yet, as tends to happen at large events, people cluster. They find their colleagues, their contacts, their comfort zones, and they stay there.

The organizers came to us with a question that landed perfectly: how do you make a room full of networking-averse professionals actually talk to strangers, without making anyone feel awkward about it?

Poetry Networking: the game of poetic connections

The conference day coincided with the Day of Poetry, which gave us our hook. Every participant arrived to find five identical verse-line cards in their conference pack. Each card carried a single line of poetry, drawn from a library of 200+ lines we wrote ourselves, all rooted in the absurdities of office life: inbox zero mythology, the kitchen fridge, the colleague who always books the meeting room for one minute too long.

The task was simple. To complete a four-line poem, you needed four different lines. Since everyone started with five copies of the same line, the only way forward was to talk to people. Trade your duplicates. Hunt for the lines that made your poem work. We designed 18 different rhyme schemes across the 200 lines, so every assembled poem could be genuinely unique, whether the player was going for rhythm, humour, or a particular mood.

Completed poems were photographed and submitted via the Connect conference app, which meant the game also drove app adoption for the client. A joint jury selected the 10 best entries from over 127 submissions. Then, in the post-lunch slot, a professional improv troupe performed the winning verses live on the main stage. The authors received books, board games, and free tickets to next year's conference.

Low entry threshold

No writing required, only trading and assembling. Anyone could play without feeling put on the spot.

FOMO and collecting

Because everyone started with the same line, the hunt for better cards created natural momentum and conversation.

App integration

Poem submissions through the Blue Colibri app turned the game into a product placement tool that felt like a reward, not a requirement.

The real impact

The real impact

  • The cards ran out. All 2,000 cards, including the reserve stock, were distributed within the first few hours of the conference.

  • 127 completed poems submitted through the app, representing 14% of the 900-strong audience and a significant spike in app engagement.

  • The game appeared unprompted in post-conference feedback. In a follow-up survey that did not specifically ask about the networking game, it was one of the most frequently cited highlights.

  • Networking without the cringe. The verse-line mechanic gave people a reason to approach strangers and a subject to talk about, removing the blank-slate awkwardness that kills most conference networking.

  • A main stage moment. The improv performance of winning poems turned a trading game into a shared theatrical experience that closed the morning on a genuine high.
