Online conferences have a problem that nobody likes to admit: most people show up, mute themselves, and disappear. Smart Home Expo 2021, Hungary's largest professional exhibition for smart home technologies, was determined not to let that happen. With 11 exhibitors and an audience of industry professionals joining from their home screens, the organisers faced a challenge that was equal parts logistical and psychological: how do you make people genuinely curious about exhibitor content when there is no corridor to wander, no coffee queue to bump into someone, and no reason to click on a stand unless you already know why?
They came to us. And we came back with a superhero.

TinkerTron's succession challenge: a digital scavenger hunt
We built a narrative layer on top of the entire expo. TinkerTron, the world's most brilliantly clumsy tech genius, was retiring. He needed a worthy successor and had set up three challenges to find one. Players who solved all three would be entered into the prize draw. His AI assistant, S.M.A.R.T.Y. (Super Machine Artificially Responding To You), ran the operation from the [eureka] stand: a chatbot that briefed players on each puzzle, validated solutions, and handed out the next mission.
The three puzzles each demanded something different. In the first, players hunted for URL fragments scattered across exhibitor stands and assembled them into a working web address that revealed the solution. In the second, they collected binary code segments and ran them through a decoder at the [eureka] stand to crack the message. In the third, they gathered mirrored and rotated letters from across the expo floor, unscrambled them, and fed the final answer back to S.M.A.R.T.Y.
The puzzle pieces were always visible at exhibitor stands from the start, but they only made sense once S.M.A.R.T.Y. had issued the relevant mission. This meant players had a reason to revisit stands they had already seen, and exhibitors had multiple waves of visitors across the day rather than a single glance-and-move-on.

The real impact
The real impact
Passive attendees became active players. The mission structure gave every visitor a personal reason to explore the expo rather than just watch it.
Exhibitors got repeat visits. Because puzzle pieces only became relevant when S.M.A.R.T.Y. issued the mission, players returned to stands they had already passed.
The story carried the experience. TinkerTron's personality and S.M.A.R.T.Y.'s chatbot tone made the game feel like an adventure, not a checklist.
A low-barrier entry point. No app download, no registration wall. Players started at the [eureka] stand and the game guided them from there.
